How to Prepare for a California Smog Check (and Pass the First Time)

California smog inspections are required every two years for most vehicles — and failing means you can't legally renew your registration. A little preparation goes a long way toward passing the first time.

How California Smog Checks Work

Most vehicles built after 1999 receive an OBD-II smog check. The inspector connects a scanner to your vehicle's OBD port and checks: (1) whether the check engine light is on, (2) whether OBD readiness monitors have completed, and (3) whether any active fault codes are present. Some older vehicles or diesels receive a tailpipe test instead.

What Causes Smog Check Failures

  • Check engine light on: Automatic failure regardless of the code
  • Incomplete OBD readiness monitors: Common after a recent battery disconnect or code clear
  • Catalytic converter failure: The most expensive common failure cause
  • Oxygen sensor failure: Affects fuel trim and emissions
  • EVAP system leaks: Fuel vapor escaping from the charcoal canister or fuel cap
  • Fuel cap failure: A cap that doesn't seal properly triggers an EVAP code

How to Prepare Your Vehicle

  1. Resolve any check engine light issues at least 2 weeks before your smog appointment
  2. Drive at least 100–150 miles after any code clear to complete readiness monitors
  3. Confirm the gas cap seals by tightening until it clicks (or replace if old)
  4. Warm up the engine thoroughly before the test — do not test with a cold engine
  5. Use a full tank of fresh fuel if the vehicle has been sitting
Pro Tip

Ask CAL Tire to scan your OBD readiness monitors before your smog appointment. We can confirm all monitors are complete so you won't fail for incomplete readiness on test day.

If You Fail the Smog Test

California's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) provides repair assistance up to $500 for income-qualifying vehicle owners. If repair costs exceed a certain threshold and the vehicle still cannot pass, a vehicle retirement program may compensate you for the vehicle. CAL Tire can diagnose the failure and provide a written estimate for CAP qualification.

Cost Exemptions and Registration Holds

New vehicles are exempt from smog checks for the first 6 years. Some diesel vehicles require a BIDS inspection instead of standard smog. If you receive a registration renewal and smog is required, you have until the renewal deadline to test — typically 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I smog a car with the check engine light on?

No — a check engine light is an automatic fail. Have the fault diagnosed and repaired, then drive the vehicle for several days to confirm the light stays off before testing.

How long does a California smog check take?

A standard OBD smog check takes approximately 15–20 minutes. If there are readiness monitor issues or the vehicle requires a functional test, it may take longer.

Does CAL Tire perform smog checks?

We can inspect and repair smog-related faults before your test and scan your vehicle's readiness monitors. Ask our service team about pre-smog diagnostics when you visit.
